Toolkit for deploying and configuring security mitigation technologies
Cybercrime is hitting all Internet users, it’s not anymore a concern for just online businesses or governments but home users’ computers like yours and mine are under constant threat and maybe, they are already infected and we don’t know it! Software vulnerabilities and exploits have become an everyday part of life. Software updates play an important role in keeping your system less prone to attacks, however, attacks can also happen before we update all installed applications with the latest secuirty updates.
Vendors such as Microsoft, apart from regular updates releases tools that help users manage risks and make it more difficult for an attacker to exploit vulnerabilities in a given piece of software. The Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET) from Microsoft is designed to help prevent hackers from gaining access to your system.
Microsoft has just released the new EMET 3.5 Tech Preview edition that features four new mitigations aimed at mitigating ROP (Return-Oriented Programming) attacks. Tech Preview releases are not aimed for full deployment and users should wait for the final version before going for wide enterprise deployment. According to Mike Reavey, senior director of the Microsoft Security Response Center, Microsoft has integrated one of the Bluehat Prize finalists’ technologies with EMET 3.5 Technology Preview to help make software significantly more resistant to exploitation.
