Using Local Group Policy to Configure Windows Update
You can configure several Windows Update settings using the Local Group Policy Editor that you cannot configure using the Windows Update control panel. For instance, you can configure your computer to wake if it is in hibernation when the assigned automatic update period occurs or allow updates to install automatically if they do not require a restart as shown in the following steps:
- To open the Local Group Policy Editor snap-in, type gpedit.msc in the Start search text box
- Navigate to Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update node
- To turn on the automated wake up feature enable the Enabling Windows Update power management to automatically wake up the system to install scheduled updates policy
- Enable the Allow automatic updates immediate installation policy – to allow updates to install automatically if they do not require a restart
- Enable the No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations policy – to ensure that an automatic restart does not occur if a user is currently logged on to the computer
- Close the Local Group Policy Editor, and type gpupdate /force into the Start search text box and press enter
