Windows Easy Transfer

Windows Easy Transfer is a utility that comes with Windows 7 that you can use to transfer user profile data such as documents, music, pictures, email and other data from one computer to another. You may find this tool very handy when you are migrating to a different computer and need to move your data to the destination computer. In the process of moving your files you can use an external hard disk or USB flash drive. Other transfer mediums exist such as, network shares and special USB cables.

Follow these steps to export data to a USB device:

  1. Connect a USB storage device that you will use to store your data
  2. Go to Start search text box and type Windows Easy Transfer and press enter
  3. On the Welcome page click Next
  4. On the What do you want to use to transfer items to your new computer? page, click An external hard disk or USB flash drive
  5. On Which computer are you using now? Page, click This is my old computer
  6. On the Choose what to transfer from this computer page, select your user name or account and click Next as shown below:
  7. On the Save your files and settings for transfer page, enter a new password twice and then click Save
  8. In the Save your Easy Transfer file dialog box, specify the USB storage device that you have connected to the computer and click Save
  9. Click Next twice and then click Close

Now, on the new computer start the Easy Transfer utility as explained in step 2 above and then follow these steps:

  1. Click Next on the Welcome page
  2. On the What do you want to use to transfer items to your new computer? page, click An external hard disk or USB flash drive
  3. On Which computer are you using now? page, click This is my new computer
  4. On the Has Windows Easy Transfer already saved your files to an external hard disk or USB flash drive? page, click Yes, open the file
  5. Navigate to the location on the USB storage device where you saved the Windows Easy Transfer migration data and select the file named Windows Easy Transfer – Items from old computer and then click Open
  6. Enter the password you have set in the previous steps
  7. On the Choose what to transfer to this computer page, make sure that your user account is selected and then click Transfer
  8. Click Close

Note, if you are transferring users files from an old computer running Windows XP or Windows Vista to a new computer running Windows 7 you need to install the Windows Easy Transfer application on the old computer. Although the tool is already present on computers running Windows Vista you still need to update it with the Windows 7 version.
