Recovering Renamed and Deleted Files using Shadow copies
First, you need to remember the location of the deleted file such as, the parent folder and secondly, if a deleted file is still in the Recycle Bin then this should be your first and only step to restore your file Also, this article is assuming that no backups of files exist!
The following steps explain how to recover a deleted file that is not present in the Recycle Bin:
- Copy the contents of the folder A where the deleted file existed and save them to a new folder B
- Replace the original folder A with its most recent version using the Restore Previous Versions option
- Copy the contents of the new folder B into the restored version folder A – allow the files to be overwritten
- Delete the new folder B
Now, the deleted file should be found in the restored folder A. The same operation applies when recovering renamed files but you would end up with both the original and the renamed files in the restored folder.
Alternatively, instead of restoring the parent folder to the same location, select a new restore location using the copy option and then search for the missing file in the this new location
